SPS - Target’s App Design

At SPS Commerce, I design experiences for our Target product that simplify complex deduction workflows and make it easier for suppliers to manage disputes. I’ve led its design since its inception in 2022, evolving the experience as the product has grown.

Progression Card Component

  • The Challenge

Users didn’t have a clear way to see how much time remained to dispute a deduction. Because deadlines weren’t visually prominent, users experienced confusion and sometimes missed their dispute windows.

  • My Approach

I designed the Deduction Timeliness component using clear labels and a progress indicator to make remaining dispute time easy to understand at a glance. I also added the component to our design library so the pattern could scale across other products.

  • The Outcome

The component made dispute deadlines easier to understand and act on, helping users avoid missed opportunities. And with it being added to our design system, it also gave teams a consistent and more efficient way to design similar experiences.

Target’s List View Filters

  • The Challenge

Target users manage large volumes of deductions and need to quickly find records by status, validity, supporting files, dates, amounts, and deduction codes. As these options grew, the filtering experience needed a clearer and more organized way to narrow results.

  • My Approach

I designed a flexible filter system that organizes criteria into clear groups and uses segmented controls for common choices. I also introduced categorized sections with selectable headers, allowing users to choose individual codes or an entire related group at once.

  • The Outcome

These filters give users a faster, clearer way to locate the exact deductions they need. The categorized dropdown pattern has also become a reusable standard for future filter designs across teams and retailer products.

Target’s Supplier Settings

  • The Challenge

When I joined the Target team as an intern in 2022, suppliers needed more control over how the product handled deductions. They lacked a centralized way to tailor automated workflows to their own policies, codes, and documentation needs.

  • My Approach

As my largest internship project, I designed the foundation of Supplier Settings and created a structure that could grow with the product. I’ve continued expanding it with controls for auto disputing, auto hiding, return policies, payment terms, validity rules, deduction limits, and reusable dispute explanations.

  • The Outcome

Supplier Settings now give users detailed control over how deductions are handled, allowing automation to better reflect their business rules and reduce repetitive work. What began as an internship project has evolved into a deeper and more valuable part of the Target experience.

Growing with the Product

  • Designing software for Target suppliers has grown alongside my career, from my first major internship project in 2022 to leading increasingly complex experiences today. Evolving the product over time has taught me how to solve immediate user problems while creating thoughtful patterns that can scale across other teams and retailer experiences.
